Post Title: On Cognitive Biases
By Mike, Feed Name: ESC Creativity and Multicultural Communication
Preview: No matter how hard we try, we cannot escape from all biases. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though. People tend to think of biases in a very negative light, but in reality, biases are simply the mind's way of running on auto-pilot. Granted, we are studying to become MORE creative people, which would require going off the beaten path more often, but one cannot be creative ALL the ....

Post Title: On Mistakes
By Mike, Feed Name: ESC Creativity and Multicultural Communication
Preview: I'm going to try something new, this time. I really liked Mary Murdock's introduction about mistakes, and having a Mistake Quotient for the day. This was something that I have been working on for about a year now. As I am a perfectionist, even the thought of purposely making mistakes sends a shiver down my spine. After much thought though, I can see the benefits that mistakes bring. I ....

Post Title: Understanding The MOOC Debate
By samorib, Feed Name: Samori's CMC11 Blog
Preview:                                            Hello everybody, recently I read an article on the MOOC debate which I found interesting.  The article is titled "Stop Polarizing the MOOC debate." and it begins talking about how there are good points made on … Continue reading →

Post Title: The “News” As We Know It
By wildmntnhoney, Feed Name: Can the Internet Produce Utopian Worlds?
Preview: So, what good IS an end-result article? Well, it offers a good-guy (county and police departments) and a bad-guy (non-custodial parents who don’t pay child support); it details the most concise “ending” to a “story”; and it makes the reader feel like justice has been served. But there is no justice, not for Us, the … Continue reading »

Post Title: On Creativity (Part 2)
By Mike, Feed Name: ESC Creativity and Multicultural Communication
Preview: I was watching Gerard Puccio's video on "What is Creativity?" and he raised a very interesting point- the difference between 'Big-C Creativity' and 'Little-c creativity'. Big C creativity would be famous examples of creativity, the works of Shakespeare and Michelangelo, while Little-c creativity deals with the small details in our lives, minor adjustments we may make ....

Post Title: On Transliteracy
By Mike, Feed Name: ESC Creativity and Multicultural Communication
Preview: "Transliteracy is concerned with what it means to be literate in the 21st century. It analyzes the relationship between people and technology, most specifically social networking, but is fluid enough to not be tied to any particular technology. It focuses more on the social uses of technology, whatever that technology may be. This terminology is new and the study of transliteracy is in the early ....

Post Title: On Creativity
By Mike, Feed Name: ESC Creativity and Multicultural Communication
Preview: The "Meat and Potatoes" of the course, I was looking forward to this chapter from the beginning. It's interesting to observe our perceptions of creativity- such as the example mentioned on this week's page, that only artists are creative. I feel that this is a common belief, because through art, one is able to create direct, obvious representations of their creativity. Also, works of ....

Title: On Cognitive Biases
Preview: Ah yes, the safety net. Very well put. I have been hanging onto one since I entered this course. Funny when I really wanted to participate in educating myself without one. It IS a struggle, I can certainly attest. I feel though, slowly, I am unfurling my grasp, digit by digit, on this net of mine. I'm just to curious to stand on the sidelines... ...

Title: Re: Creativity
Preview: You raise some interesting and extremely valuable ideas here Scott.  It is in those "gaps" or little mental breaks, that quite often, breakthrough thinking occurs.  The mind wanders and the "control" we tend to exercise over our thought processes (ingrained habits of thiking after years of practiced training) slips and allows "out of the norm" thinking to happen. When we expect new ....

Title: Re: Creativity
Preview: Guided brainstorming sounds like an interesting experience Carol. I find that at the end of a day editing online courses on the computer I'll sit there stunned watching myself unable to make another move. As if my brain had enough of being deliberate and freezes. But the watching part seems to almost detach itself and carry on with some pointless task like the running but not moving dreams. ....
